NEW YORK (AP) -- Lindleigh Whetstone,18, wears headphones as she shoves clothes into the washing machine. Her classmate, Stepheno Zollos, 17, wears them as he shops for groceries. But they're not listening to the top 40; they're learning Spanish. The two are students in Kathy O'Connor's class at Tidewater Community College in Southeastern Virginia. O'Connor got an $11,000 grant to lend the students iPods for learning anywhere.Whetstone says her Spanish listening went from 30 minutes to 5 hours a week..Students are increasingly using MP3 players to listen to books, textbook study guides and language labs. Books and personal stereos have always been portable, but audio books are easier to carry around in MP3 form. A typical 300-page novel might take up 12 CDs, but only a tiny portion of an MP3 player's memory and prices for audiobook downloads are mostly comparable to audio CDs.Though a September 2006 Internet survey by market research firm Harrison Group Inc....

Apple's Steve Jobs called on music companies to abandon digital rights management software Tuesday, which restricts how digital downloads can be used. This message was posted on Apple's Web site by Jobs on Tuesday: With the stunning global success of Apple's iPod music player and iTunes online music store, some have called for Apple to "open" the digital rights management (DRM) system that Apple uses to protect its music against theft, so that music purchased from iTunes can be played on digital devices purchased from other companies, and protected music purchased from other online music stores can play on iPods. Let's examine the current situation and how we got here, then look at three possible alternatives for the future. To begin, it is useful to remember that all iPods play music that is free of any DRM and encoded in "open" licensable formats, such as MP3 and AAC....

Instead of going to the library to get an audio book to listen to you can download it from their Web site onto your MP3 player. The Web site is www.hallcountylibrary.org and you can access the downloadable audio books by clicking on "Databases" which is located at the top of the Web page. All you need to get started is your Hall County Library Card number. Important: The service only works with MP3 players, not iPods. Video games are more popular than ever. Unfortunately there are a lot of games out there that glorify violence and have adult content. If your kids got some video games this Christmas and you're not sure about them, see what their ESRB rating is. ESRB is the Entertainment Standards Rating Board. Each game should have one of the following ratings on it: EC, early childhood, for ages 3 and older E, everybody, for ages 6 and older E10+, for ages 10 and older Teen, for ages 13 and older Mature, for ages 17 and older AO, adults only, ages 18 and older If your child has a game and the rating is not on it, you can look the game up at www.esrb.org and get it along with a summary of the content Are you getting ready to clean the soot out of your fireplace? If so, consider doing this first....

Scratchy vinyl on its way out

The new millennium's MP3 revolution has been tough on the music industry's more tangible side. It's been particularly detrimental to the "techno" scene, because electronic music aficionados, who are almost by definition more tech savvy, were among the first to embrace the changeover. And while the DJ market has historically been synonymous with and predicated upon the 12-inch vinyl single, MP3s changed everything. New DJ setups like Stanton's Final Scratch and Rane's Serato systems allow DJs to manipulate MP3s exactly like vinyl. Other programs, like Ableton's Live software, push the envelope even further, with the capacity to do on-the-fly editing and basically create new music from scratch. The convenience of these laptop-based technologies is far more attractive to touring DJs than lugging around as many as three crates of archaic records....

The global market for digital recorded music, delivered both via broadband and over mobile-phone networks, is expected to grow by nearly six-fold during the period from 2005 to 2010, iSuppli Corp. predicts. However, with broadband and mobile-phone music services increasingly battling over the same digital music space, competition for established players in this area will intensify. The digital music market is comprised of both the mobile/cellular phone music market and the broadband music area. Mobile music has been driven by the emergence of ringtones and ringtunes, which now have grown into significant markets. Notably, the mobile market is now migrating to full-track music downloads. Meanwhile, the broadband music market exploded in 2005, driven by Apple Computer Inc.'s successful iTunes music store....

Blogging is so pass. Podcasts are where the action is -- and if you want proof that the classical music world thinks so, look no further than Indiana University and Opera News magazine. Let's start off with IU's Jacobs School of Music, which this past week released its first-ever podcast as part of its "IUMusicLive!" Web site (www.music.indiana.edu/iumusiclive). Apple's Australian iTunes music store is now one year old, but there's still no sign of the legal download service on this side of the Tasman. The industry rumour-mill was in overdrive last week, predicting the site was set for an early November launch. However, an industry source says Apple still hasn't signed any deals with New Zealand record companies, though it is negotiating with them, meaning the site is probably still a few months away, at least. Apple Australia won't comment. Apple has iTunes Music Stores in 21 countries, and it typically dominates the space, particularly in the US where it sells 85 per cent of online music. The company must negotiate separately with record companies in each country. The sticking point is usually the price at which songs are sold....
